Ela will be be speaking about the challenges of designing a collaborative space, taking SUPERMARKT, the creative resource center in Berlin-Wedding, as an example. Ela will share the challenges and positive outcomes involved in establishing spaces such as SUPERMARKt and how they contribute to contemporary approaches to urban development.

Biography

Ela Kagel is an independent curator and producer with a specialism in art, culture and technology. Since the mid-1990s Ela has produced and designed media art exhibitions, networked performances, mobile and location based applications as well as temporary spaces for cultural exchange. She has been a long-time collaborator and researcher at the Public Art Lab, Berlin and from 2009-20011 was a program curator for the Transmediale Festival for Art and Digital Culture in Berlin. While at Transmediale, Ela developed the Free Culture Incubator, a series of workshops and events based on free and open culture. Central to Ela’s practice is supporting bottom up initiatives, which are deeply rooted in particular communities of practice. From this perspective, in 2006, she also established and curated Upgrade! Berlin and in 2012, founded with Zsolt Szentirmai and David Farine, SUPERMARKT – a creative resource center for Berlin. Ela currently works as the Director of SUPERMARKT, where she curates the cultural programme and supports the everyday running of the organisation.
