How do we address troubles and bias in artificial intelligence (AI), when the AI is already out in the world? Drawing on the Twitter image cropping algorithm, design engineer and researcher, Axel Meunier shares their views.

Biography

Axel Meunier is a design engineer and an associate researcher in the Algoglitch research programme on artificial intelligence at Sciences Po médialab, Paris, where his work focuses on public participation in AI.

Currently this is realised through a number of large-scale, multi-year projects, including SoBigData++ which focuses on social mining and big data in Europe and Shaping AI, a ten-year project that focus on global public discourses of AI, across Germany, UK, Canada and France. Alongside this work, Axel is completing a PhD at Goldsmiths College, on how audiences already engaged with artificial intelligence are affected by algorithmic decisions and infrastructures. Besides his design and research work, Axel is engaged with several interdisciplinary artist collectives including Save As Draft, Arts Visuels Debout, DUUU Radio, Cuesta.
